hree Indonesian public service initiatives are among 12 programs worldwide selected for this year’s United Nations Public Service Awards, which recognize efforts to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through inclusive, transparent and participatory public service delivery.
The awards will be presented at the conclusion of the UN Public Service Forum on Thursday in Tbilisi, Georgia, hosted by Li Junhua, United Nations under-secretary-general for Economic and Social Affairs, in commemoration of UN Public Service Day which is marked every June 23.
The UN received 700 applications from 62 countries, with the 12 winning initiatives are ranging from Cambodia’s digital document verification platform, Dominican Republic real-time monitoring tool for procurement, unified public data platform in Saudi Arabia, early childhood education program for stateless, undocumented and ethnic minority children in Thailand, to the three Indonesian initiatives.
Parepare City Agriculture, Marine and Fisheries Agency will receive the award in the category of “Gender-responsive public services” for its “Berdaya Srikandi”, the agency’s cultural approach in improving the economy of coastal women.
The program empowers economically vulnerable women in the South Sulawesi city by giving them vocational and entrepreneurship training. The program also enlists the native-born Parepare young women who have just finished their university level education as the main facilitator in the program, which results in the program successfully established trust for its target demographic and helped them overcome social and cultural challenges in public participation, increased their income and gained financial independence.
Development Finance Comptroller (BPKP) is set to receive an Honorable Mention in the category of “Transparent and accountable public institutions to achieve the SDGs” for its Village Financial System (Siskeudes) program.
The program standardizes the budgeting system, financial administration and reporting of all 75,265 villages across the country, which helped increases transparency and accountability and prevent graft in village finances. The program is also connected with the central government’s system for real time monitoring and helped data-based decision making.
